Where can I Find a Work from Home Job?

Working at home
With the economy in such dire straits, more and more people are looking to supplement their incomes.  One way to do that is with work from home jobs.  There are many benefits to such a job opportunity if you can find one.

Working from home is a privilege many are seeking to try.  Some of the benefits are easy to see.  Less money is spent on gas when the commute to and from work is cut out.  Parents can spend more time with small children and save on childcare bills with a home-based job.

There are other benefits of working from home that may not be apparent right away, but they soon take shape.  Working from home can be less stressful.  The political climate of the office is a distant memory.  The only attitude you have to deal with is your own.  You have more freedom to organize the work day to suit your needs.

But, where can you find a work from home job?  There are more people looking than there are jobs, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find one.  When you do find one, however, being prepared to act will make all the difference.

Begin with your current employer.  Many employers are willing to pay someone in their office to work from home.  That cuts your commute and their overhead.  Even if coming out of the office wasn’t an option before, your work ethic and good track record with the company may get them to extend such an allowance.  It wouldn’t hurt to ask.

It is helpful to know what type of work you are looking for.  Someone who enjoys sales could then move to established sales companies that specialize in the home business model.  That includes some that you probably know well:  Mary Kay, Arbonne, The Pampered Chef, Partylite.  You pay upfront for a starter kit, but the company offers support for new sellers and all the helpful information they can throw at you.

Look to the Internet.  There are reputable sites that offer jobs without a commute.  The well-known job search engines can help you:  Monster (www.monster.com), Craigslist (www.craigslist.com), CareerBuilder (www.careerbuilder.com), Yahoo! HotJobs (http://hotjobs.yahoo.com), Media Bistro (www.mediabistro.com).

If you are a freelancer, there are also places for you.  Writing, website design, programming, and other specialties can find freelance jobs online.  Sites like eLance (www.elance.com), Associated Content (www.associatedcontent.com), Constant Content (www.constant-content.com), and others offer opportunities for freelancers to make some money.

Another way to find work from home jobs is to join forums.  Forums for stay at home parents, stay at home moms, and working at home parents provide support as well as information on job leads and how to run your home enterprise.

Working from home is possible, but you have to do the legwork to find the job opportunities that are right for you.  Any of the sites mentioned above can start you on the right track.

Ways of Successfully Advertising Offline

Get the word out about your business through advertising. You have identified your target market so now it’s time to reach them. Here are a few ways to successfully advertise your business offline.

These advertising methods will work for a storefront and a website business. To make a sale, you draw in the people who are most likely to give you their money. That is the goal for all business.

1. Do a radio spot. This one will be fun. Who hasn’t dreamed of being on the air? A local radio program may want to highlight your business if you are doing something in the community. You can discuss who you are and what you want people to know about your business.

There is also advertising spots where you pay for time and an announcer reads your ad over the airwaves. With either choice, choose a time when your target market will be listening. The morning commute (between 7 and 9 a.m.) will reach most business types. They are in their cars fighting traffic. Also choose a radio station or radio show that is likely to be popular with your potential customers.

2. Advertise in appropriate magazines. By appropriate we mean magazines that cater to your target market. You wouldn’t spend money on an ad in Vanity Fair if you were trying to reach pet lovers. There are hundreds of magazines in existence that cater to all types of tastes. Evaluate the ones in your area. Don’t neglect local magazines that people can pick up for free. Your ads will be seen by all types of people including your target market.

3. Pass out business cards. A business card is like a mini billboard. It has your business name, logo, tagline, contact information, and website address. Within the confines of that card, the holder has all they need to know to find out more about you. Slip one into direct mailings, all business correspondence, and into your pocket in case you run into someone in need of your services.

4. Word of Mouth advertising. Nothing sells your products or services better than a glowing recommendation. Someone who has experienced your customer service, quick turnaround time, and useful product will pass the word on to their friends. You can sweeten that pot by offering credit or cash for referrals.

5. Local newspaper can bring more customers. Plenty of people read the newspaper. Your ads or press releases about your business will be seen by plenty of people. If your target audience reads the newspaper on a regular basis, advertising here can produce more business. A target audience of teenagers and young adults probably wouldn’t get much notice in the newspaper. Spring for bigger font and bigger ads so no one will have a hard time reading it.

Are you marketing your business offline? If not, now is the perfect time to begin. An entire city of potential customers is waiting to hear about your business.

Trial and Errors – Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

Life is full of ups and downs, successes and failures.  The landscape of business is no different.  The longer you stay in the business world, the more likely you are to see that bear out.  But, don’t hold back your entrepreneurial dreams because of potential failure.

The basis of scientific research is trial and error.  You try one experiment and it fails.  The next time, you vary one chemical or condition and try the experiment again.  Each time that you do this, the end results are recorded regardless of whether they are the results you wanted or not.

The entire scientific process is about evaluating the outcomes of your experiments.  The failed experiments are as important as the ones that succeeded.  Here, we are speaking of failure as an outcome that was unexpected and unplanned.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it.”
~~Bill Cosby~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Failure is one reason that many individuals won’t realize their entrepreneurial potential.  One mistake or error makes them gun-shy.  It prevents them from taking another step forward.

Anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit knows that nothing is certain in life or business.  The only way to find success is to take a leap forward and risk failure.  At the least, you will learn something about yourself in the attempt:

1.  You weren’t afraid to try.
2.  Failure is not fatal.
3.  Now you know what not to do.

For an entrepreneur, even a failure is a great opportunity.  There are many categories of failure (in the good sense).  Entrepreneurs can make rookie mistakes, trust mistakes, and poor business decisions.  No one is immune to any of the three.

Rookie mistakes could be choosing a poor domain name, not performing enough market testing, or issues with business start-up.  If you want to stay in business, the only thing to do is begin again with new knowledge that you didn’t have the first time in these areas.

Further down the line, maybe you formed a partnership and they got the better end of the deal.  Once again, you dust yourself off and start over.

No one said it wouldn’t be painful to deal with these setbacks, but the challenge is to profit in these areas as well.  If you scan the business information on the Internet, you’ll see that there are as many courses and eBooks on what not to do as there are on what to do.  How do you think the entrepreneur got the information for the former?  They experienced it.

People new to entrepreneurship want to know what they should and should not do.  The ones who have experienced failure are more than happy to share their knowledge so someone else can avoid hard knocks.  That, in itself, is a marketable business opportunity.

Embrace all aspects of business including the possibility of failure.  Once you dig yourself out and dust yourself off, you could be standing in a goldmine.

Time Boxing

We all want a better way to manage our time.  It is easy for the hours to slip by with only one task disappearing from our list.  Perhaps some time management skills are in order.

One useful tool for managing time and getting work done is time boxing.  No, there won’t be any violence here.  Think of the geometric shape of a box, instead of the ring and fighting gloves.

For some tasks, you might spend five hours completing each one.  Did you need five hours or did you spend that time getting it perfect?  Between breaks, your mind wandering, and other distractions, you might only have worked half that amount of time on the project.

Time boxing is a concept mostly used by software developers, but it can be adapted for other projects in the workplace and in personal use at home.  It involves assigning necessary tasks a certain measure of time in your day.  Within those time constraints you accomplish what you can and then move on to something else.

watching timeFor the office, time boxing helps you whittle away at a task list that might be long.  Usually a long list brings on the pangs of procrastination.  Since the task is so large, anxiety sets in that can keep you from wanting to do any work at all.  Time boxing takes care of anxiety that leads to procrastination and perfectionism.

Here’s what you do.  Decide what needs to get done.  It could be on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis depending on deadlines for your projects.  For daily tasks, you can set aside time for each task throughout the day.  The time period allotted may be enough to complete the job or it may not.  If it is not, allocate more time later on.

On a weekly basis, projects with priority can have a longer stretch of time.  Work on a large project for a couple of hours a day.  Keep using allocated time each day until it is finished.
Time boxing works for open-ended projects that have a deadline, but no other milestones in between.  Tackle a large project in small chunks so that everything is ready for delivery by the due date.

Time boxing allows you to focus on the task at hand.  For 30 minutes or an hour, you are working as hard as you can to get the work done.  After that, the project sits until its turn comes around again.

Utilizing time boxing increases productivity.  Instead of going from task to task aimlessly, you have a purpose throughout your day and adequate time to make a dent in your work.  At home, doing chores can actually take less time with this technique.

Are you interested in time boxing?  Give it a try when managing your home life, as well as for workplace projects.

The Importance of Website Advertising

It is a common misconception that if you build a website, the traffic will come.  The process from building to profit making takes a little more elbow grease than that.  Website advertising is important.

Advertising gets the word out about who you are and what you are selling, whether it is goods or services.  On the Internet, your site is one of thousands.  To have a fighting chance, use every means available to you to advertise.

Website advertising can be done online.  The Internet is a virtual reality.  Think of each website as a different store.  Some stores you like to go in and some you haven’t had a need to visit.  But, if you saw some catchy ads for other stores while you were shopping, you might be inclined to visit them.

Since you want to advertise what you are selling, you’ll need to find a place online where that is possible.  Choose sites that have something in common with your product but are not in direct competition with your market.  Most sites sell advertising space as a way of making extra revenue.

Consider affiliate programs.  You can advertise on sites where you will be noticed and do the same for others.  As you grow, consider Google AdWords for your own site to make some money and promote similar sites.

Make use of your signature line in emails.  Include your business website address and a tagline in addition to your name.  Now, anyone who gets email from you will know where to find your website.  Your main purpose is to keep your website, and thus your products, in the forefront of everyone’s mind.  Chances are people will visit you if they see the address everywhere they look.

Along that same line, you can advertise offline for online businesses.  When you create your business cards, be sure to add your website address and in the same size font as the other pertinent information.  It is easy to log on to the Internet in the office, at home, or at a cyber café and see what is going on at your website.

In fact, people would rather have a website address than a telephone number.  A telephone number conjures up visions of someone with an annoying voice trying to pressure you into buying something.  On the Internet, people can satisfy their curiosity without any strings attached.  In that way, a website provides an excellent advertising opportunity.

The competition on the Internet is stiff.  Each website is clamoring for their piece of the market right along with you.  To increase your traffic, you have to stand above the rest.  One way to do this is to advertise your website as often and in as many places as you can.  But, not just any places — appropriate on and offline venues your potential customers will see.

The Effectiveness of Banner Ads

Banner ads are used as a form of advertising on a website.  Some can be big or small, but the point is to get people to click on them.  With the rise of other types of virtual ads, are banner ads still effective?

First, let’s discuss what a banner ad is and what it is supposed to do.  When a page on a website loads, there are advertisements at the top and/or bottom of the page.  Those are banner ads.  Some are flashy, blinding (you need sunglasses to see them), small (magnifying glass) or large.  Banner ads are click-through ads.  If you click in the space, you are redirected to another site that tells you more about the ad.

Many banner ads are ignored, especially if they flash a lot.  Looking at all those annoying colors while you are trying to read the text on a page is maddening.  People figured the idea was to make them as big and bright as possible to be seen.  That worked but that didn’t mean that anyone would actually click on them.

Banner ads can be many sizes.  If your banner ad is too large, it won’t load as quickly as the webpage.  By the time it finishes loading the graphics and text, your potential customer could be on to another page.  Banner ads still exist of course, but more and more people are opting for programs like Google AdWords which customizes ads to your website.  You can bring in a little revenue and the ads don’t take up a lot of space or blind anyone.

If you want to use banner ads on your website, here are a few tips to increase your click-through rate.

1.  Add a “click here” button.  People who click on these ads want to reach the destination as quickly as possible.  Giving specific instructions helps them get there.  You can actually click anywhere on the ad where your cursor turns into a hand, but without explicit instructions where to click, some people will ignore the banner.

2.  Forego the bright colors for a little flash and bigger font.  An ad can have color on the flashing words or buttons.  That catches the eye.  The words need to be bigger than a fly speck and tell the visitor why they need to click on your ad.  You only have one shot at this with each visitor, so make it count.

3.  Connect the banner ad with the page they want to view.  Clicking on ads that take you everywhere but the page with the offer frustrates visitors.  Most won’t hunt for the page – they’ll just go back to where they were before.

Banner ads can be effective if used in a certain manner.  Keep them short and to the point with a little flash to attract traffic.

Take Control of Your Business – Create a Simple Business Plan

It’s hard to get somewhere if you don’t know where you are going.  In business, a business plan is the roadmap you follow towards your goal of success.  The hardest part is sitting down and getting started.

What does a business plan do?  A business plan is your Plan B.  You have this idea for a business.  A business plan answers all the necessary questions:  Where do I get money to fund the project?  When will I turn a profit?  What will be the advertising strategy?  All of these questions and more are rolled into a business plan.

business planWithout a business plan, you might not be prepared for what comes next.  Businesses can get into trouble.  With a business plan, you have mapped out other possible avenues to peruse if the path you are on doesn’t pan out.  A business plan also details what equipment you will need and how you will account for your cash flow.

A business plan can be several pages or a few.  It all depends on the complexity of your business and its structure.  Many businesses are small and they are sole proprietorships (one liable owner).  If you are forming a partnership, work on the business plan together.

Here are some categories for your business plan:

1.  Business structure – Will this be a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or other?  In some cases, the business structure also determines accounting practices and other paperwork that needs to be completed for registering the business.

2.  Business name – Every business needs a name that it can stand behind.  The name will carry your brand, company ethic, and influence your logo.  A catchy name that is short and to the point is easy to remember.  Don’t make it too complicated for yourself or your customers.

3.  Business mission statement – What is your business about?  How will you operate?  What makes your product or service stand out from others?  The information here will help in developing a tagline for customers to associate with your business.

4.  Goals – Where do you see the business in five years?  Will it grow into other markets?  If so, what are those markets?  A business could begin as a physical building and expand into the online world.  You may work from your garage, but later decide to outsource most tasks.  The main goal of business is to grow and grow and grow.  Choose goals in that direction.

5.  Financial viability – What prices will you charge?  What profit do you expect to make?  You might not know how much, but based on the market, you can estimate how long until the first monies come in and a ballpark figure of yearly earnings.

A business plan doesn’t have to be complicated.  Its job is to be flexible enough to grow and change as you do.  If you choose another direction, rewrite portions of the plan to account for that.

Take Action and Get Results

Take actionWhat is the main focus of your business?  No matter what your market, the goal is to make money.  In order to do that, some planning is needed.

Many people don’t take action because they don’t know what to do.  That is in business as well as life.  You know where you want to go but without a roadmap, you aren’t going to get to square one.

Knowledge is one of the great equalizers in our society.  It’s who you know but also what you know that counts.  Sometimes, you can outsmart someone with better contacts by simply using your noodle.  If you want to be an entrepreneur, learn all that you can about the ins and outs of business:

  • Business start-up
  • Writing a business plan
  • Website set-up
  • Advertising
  • Marketing
  • Product branding

The more that you understand on the front end, the easier it is to formulate positive actions you can take to get results in your business.

So, what’s next?  Well, since you are armed with the knowledge, it’s time to put that knowledge to good use.  Most businesses need money to get started, even Internet businesses.  The start-up costs are quite low with the latter, but you’ll still have to have some funds.

Nothing in business will just fall into your lap, so a bit of pro-action is needed.  Go in search of what you need.  Make a list.  If it’s money, calculate exactly how much you will need plus a cushion to see you through to the first client payment.  If it’s equipment, list that also.

Now, you have a place to begin.  Talk to family and friends about your business venture.  Host a gathering to present your business enterprise and see if they want to invest.  If it’s a smaller venture, it could be as simple as asking your spouse if the family can spare the start-up funds.

Scour the Internet.  There are tons of sites that offer free content and eBooks on various aspects of marketing.  If you want to create a business website, check out reviews on website hosts and blog hosts.  Join forums and business groups with similar interests and ask questions.  A large part of the information you need to get your business off the ground comes at no charge – you just have to be willing to ask for it.

Before going further, consider what you have accomplished so far.  Your business idea has taken shape in your mind and been translated into tangible efforts.  You have your starting money, equipment, and resources to set up a website and begin marketing your product or service.

Now, implement what you have learned.  You’ll encounter glitches along the way, but you have established relationships with other businesspeople to help you overcome them.  Success in business comes in small steps.  With every piece of knowledge and contact you make, another opportunity is born to help you move a step closer to your goal.

Monetizing Your Mini Site

Mini sites can be powerful moneymaking machines. Once they’re in place, they can bring in money without you lifting a finger. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before you start counting those dollars, you must first find a way to make them.

A well crafted mini site is focused on a specific niche. In order to monetize it, you must offer something that appeals to that niche. There are several ways to accomplish this.

1.Create Your Own Product

Creating an information product is one of the most lucrative ways to make money with a mini site. A simple ebook can sell for $20 or more, and an ebook series or online course could net you hundreds of dollars. If you’re good at writing, this could be the perfect moneymaking opportunity for you. For more info on creating you own information product go to Mini Site Solution.

But you don’t necessarily have to be an accomplished writer to sell your own info product. You could purchase some PLR content, do a little rewriting and adding on, and sell it as something unique. If writing is not your thing, maybe you could put together an educational video series.

2.Buy the Rights to Someone Else’s Product

For those who don’t have the time or inclination to create a new product, this is a great way to start making money quickly. You can buy master resale rights to reports and courses that others have written, sell them, and keep 100% of the profits. There are even packages available that include a sales page and graphics, so all you have to do is upload the files to your hosting and promote the site. For a one-time investment, you get unlimited moneymaking potential.

3.Join an Affiliate Program

If you want to get started with a minimal investment of both time and money, affiliate programs are definitely the way to go. You simply promote other people’s products, and when a sale is made, you keep a percentage of the profits. Your only investments are the time and money it takes to set up and promote your mini site.

Whether you’re bursting with creative energy or just want to find an easy and inexpensive way to make some passive income, there is a mini site monetization method for you. If you have just a little knowledge about setting up a website, you can be up and running in no time. If not, it’s not hard to learn. Its one of those things that literally anyone can do.

For help with your mini sites, go to Mini Site Solution. A free video will be there to explain what mini sites can do for you and leads you into creating and marketing your mini sites.

How to Promote Your Mini Site for Free

Large website with big budgets often spend millions of dollars on advertising campaigns. They plaster their URL on billboards across the nation, buy full-page spreads in magazines and spend small fortunes on pay per click advertising. How can a mini site run by your average Joe compete with that?

A better question might be, “Why should a mini site try to compete with that?” A mini site usually consists of one, or at most a few, pages. And it targets a very specific market niche. An ad in the New York Times would, in the overwhelming majority of cases, be overkill.

Promoting a mini site is doable on a mini budget. In fact, it is entirely possible to promote your mini site without spending a dime. Getting traffic may take a little more time and effort than if you spent big bucks, but your profit margin will be much higher. For more in depth ideas, hints and tricks on free advertising go to Mini Site Solution.

Here are some free methods for promoting your mini site:

Do your own SEO. There is a small learning curve, but you can do it yourself. And once you get it right, your search engine placement will keep the traffic coming.

Submit articles to free reprint sites, such as EzineArticles.com. Include a link to your site in the resource box. The article must include the resource box whenever it is reprinted, so you’ll get links from anyone who uses your content.

Join forums that appeal to members of your target market. Participate in discussions, and include a link to your site in your signature.

Comment on blogs. Most will include a link to your site with your comment. This will help boost your search engine rankings and could result in click-through traffic.

Contact bloggers that reach your target market and ask to write a guest post for them. This is a great way to establish yourself as an expert and create interest in your site.

Write a special report, making sure to include a link to your site. Then contact others who sell information products and ask them if they would like to give it away as a bonus with their product.

Write a press release. Submit it to press release websites, online publications and bloggers.

You don’t have to spend obscene amounts of money to get the word out about your mini site. With some creativity, you can start getting traffic without spending a dime on advertising.

For help with your mini sites, go to Mini Site Solution. A free video will be there to explain what mini sites can do for you and leads you into creating and marketing your mini sites.
